The Perfect Pair: Grand Cayman and the Ritz Carlton

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory located in the Western Caribbean Sea, approximately 150 miles south of Cuba and 180 miles northwest of Jamaica. Comprising of three islands—Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman.

Christopher Columbus first sighted the Cayman Islands in 1503 during his fourth voyage to the New World. He initially named them "Las Tortugas" due to the numerous sea turtles in the area. The turtle population was endangered during the 17th & 18th century, as the island attracted hunters after turtles shells, meat and eggs. Today, turtles are protected and known to aid in the local biodiversity of the islands habitats.

In the 1730s, the first permanent settlers arrived, mainly from the British Isles. They established a thriving community focused on agriculture, particularly growing coconuts and limes. Fast forward to the 20th century, particularly after World War II, the islands shifted from an agricultural economy to one based on tourism and financial services, significantly transforming their economic landscape.
